CTOnews.com, July 27 (Xinhua)-- Google Maps (Google Maps) is about to usher in a new heavyweight competitor, and Overture Maps Foundation recently released its first Alpha version.

The foundation is led by the Linux Foundation and jointly formed by Meta, Microsoft, mapping company TomTom and Amazon Web Services (AWS), hoping to challenge Google Maps's dominance in the mapping field.

The first Alpha version of this release includes millions of data points for buildings, roads and geographical boundaries. This open source map project is very large and plans to integrate different map sources to provide rich map data.

The first version of Alpha contains about 59 million points of interest (POI, representing a landmark, scenic spot on the map, etc.) and 750 million architectural footprints that show the shape and size of the structure.

Marc Prioleau, head of Overture Maps Foundation, said that POI data currently covers about 60 to 70 percent of the world's regions, but hopes to expand to 80 million to 100 million POI in the future.

Prioleau says most of the construction data comes from Meta and Microsoft, which share their data from Facebook, Instagram and Bing Maps, and then remove some duplicates.

Road data is heavily dependent on OpenStreetMap. CTOnews.com Note: OpenStreetMap is an open source free world map that can be publicly edited and is a community project.

Overture has modified and standardized OpenStreetMap data to make it easier to use and more accurate.
