CTOnews.com Porsche is planning to gradually electrify its car lineup so that electric cars account for 80 percent of its sales by 2030 and plans to make its iconic 911 the only fuel-powered model.

Pixabay Porsche has not previously announced plans to eventually produce only one fuel model, but because of its investment in Chilean energy company HIF Global, the company is seen as closely related to electronic fuels.

Karl Dums, head of Porsche's e-fuel team, said the company is planning to electrify its compact SUV Macan, then the 718 sports car, and then the best-selling Cayenne. The 911, which accounts for 13% of Porsche sales in 2022, is an exception.

Karl Dums said: "My strategy is to move to electric cars first, but we will use internal combustion engines to produce 911 for as long as possible. He also said Porsche's electric vehicle program and e-fuel investment are separate.

E-fuel is made from carbon dioxide captured from the air and renewable hydrogen, and when it burns, it re-releases carbon dioxide, which proponents argue would be "carbon neutral." Dums added that HIF Global's e-fuel is more targeted at the aviation industry and heavy vehicles, as passenger cars will almost always use existing conventional electrification schemes.

Automotive and business experts say e-fuel will only be used in high-end models, and major automakers may avoid mass promotion of e-fuel models because they have committed $1.2 trillion (CTOnews.com notes: currently about 8.57 trillion yuan) to regular electrification of cars.
