CTOnews.com, July 25 (Xinhua) according to a research report released on Tuesday by an industry association, the US semiconductor industry will face a shortfall of about 67000 talents by 2030. The report was jointly prepared by the American Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and the Oxford Institute of Economics (Oxford Economics).

The report predicts that the number of employees in the US chip industry will grow from about 345000 this year to 460000 by the end of the decade. However, with current school graduation rates, the United States cannot train enough qualified people to keep up with this growth.

The report comes as the US tries to strengthen its domestic chip industry. On August 9, the President of the United States signed the Chip Act, which allocated funds for new manufacturing plants, research and development, and so on. The U.S. Department of Commerce manages $39 billion in manufacturing subsidies under the bill, and companies such as Intel, TSMC and Samsung Electronics have said they will apply for these subsidies. The bill also provides a 25 per cent investment tax credit for new chip factories, valued at $24 billion.

SIA says these factories will create jobs. The shortfall is expected to include computer scientists, engineers and technicians, and about half of all future jobs in the chip industry will be engineers.

"this is a problem we have faced for a long time," said John Neuffer, chairman of SIA. "but with the introduction of the Chip Act and the shift of more manufacturing to the US, the problem has become more prominent."

The report also points out that the shortage of science, technology, engineering and mathematics graduates in the United States is not limited to the chip industry. By the end of 2023, there may be 1.4 million jobs unfilled.
