CTOnews.com, July 25-Apple recently obtained a patent called Space Audio Navigation, which describes how to use binaural audio devices, such as Apple Vision Pro headphones or AirPods, to provide navigation tips to users.

Spatial audio is a technology that can simulate the direction and distance of the sound source, making the user feel that the sound is nearby or far away. CTOnews.com notes that, unlike traditional voice navigation, spatial audio navigation does not interrupt the music, audiobook or phone that the user is listening to, nor does it give the user explicit instructions (such as "turn left" or "right"), but guide the user by changing the location or volume of the sound.

For example, when the user is listening to music, the Apple device can place the sound source of the music in front of the user, let the user move along the path, and when it needs to turn, move the sound source to the user's side, allowing the user to follow the sound naturally. This will not affect the auditory enjoyment of users, but also provide a more subtle way to convey navigation information.

Apple believes that this space audio navigation system is not only more convenient, but also more secure. Because voice navigation may allow users to follow instructions blindly, regardless of the surrounding situation, resulting in accidents. Using sound direction and distance as navigation prompts, users need to judge whether it is safe to follow the sound, rather than being told what to do by voice.

The patent application also describes how to adjust other aspects of the sound (such as frequency and reverberation) to affect the virtual direction and distance of the sound. The patent application includes six inventors, including Avi Bar-Zeev and Rahul Nair, who have previously been involved in patents related to tracking users' eyes in Apple's AR.
