CTOnews.com July 25 news, most metals once broken, in the absence of external force, usually can not "self-heal." However, the research team recently found that metals such as copper and platinum can actually repair themselves and are expected to change engineering design in the future.

According to a study published last week in the journal Nature, materials science teams from Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, N.M., and Texas University of Albuquerque stumbled upon small amounts of metal, such as copper and platinum, at the nanoscale for "internal self-repair."

Within 40 minutes of the team's observation, both copper and platinum samples healed as if cracks had never been seen before.

Although a surprise to many researchers, this healing ability actually confirms the theory first proposed a decade ago by Michael Demkowicz, a professor of materials science and engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Through computer modeling in 2013, Demkowicz believes that there is a mistake in the existing material theory, indicating that under certain conditions, metals can repair cracks caused by stress.
