Gurman: Apple's Vision Pro market is so small that most developers are reluctant to develop applications specifically for it.

Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, July 24 (Xinhua)-- Apple will launch a Vision Pro space computing headset early next year, but the product may face a snub from app developers.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, most developers are currently reluctant to develop applications specifically for Vision Pro because the market for the device is too small and needs to adapt to a new environment and interaction.

Vision Pro is a headset that combines virtual reality and augmented reality, allowing users to immerse themselves in three-dimensional space and experience a variety of content and games. In theory, Vision Pro can run existing iPad applications, but doing so does not take full advantage of the features of the device. In order to make iPad applications work better on Vision Pro, developers need to migrate and optimize them, which requires a lot of time and effort.

Gurman interviewed some well-known developers in virtual reality and said that the Vision Pro is expected to sell only about 500000 units a year, while Apple sells as many as 250 million other devices. This means that the potential user base of Vision Pro is one-500th of that of other Apple devices, which is a big obstacle for developers. They also say that because Vision Pro lacks the support of VR controllers, content and games on some other VR platforms cannot be easily migrated across platforms.

Developers' attitudes towards Vision Pro are also influenced by the history of Apple Watch. When Apple Watch was first launched, many developers developed applications for it, but later found that it was not very successful, and many watch apps were abandoned, which made many developers feel scared, and Vision Pro was in a similar situation. It is not clear how people will use the head display, and what is its main attraction. Therefore, it is a risk to develop applications for it. And because Vision Pro's $3500 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 25165 yuan) is much higher than watches, its potential market is smaller.

David Smith, developer of Widgetsmith applications, recently shared some insights into the workload and possible problems of porting applications to Vision Pro. Even apps that seem perfect for Vision Pro, such as watching streaming videos on headsets, developers are less active. Even Netflix, the largest streaming platform, has no plans to develop native applications for Vision Pro, Gurman said.

This is not a good sign, because any new hardware platform will need to rely on applications to attract potential buyers. And Vision Pro itself has been difficult to popularize because of its high price and limited production. If coupled with the lack of attractive applications as a further hindrance to the willingness to buy, it is even more detrimental to the product.

One prominent developer interviewed by Gurman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, even suggested that Apple might have to pay them to develop native apps for Vision Pro. In other words, Apple has to bear the cost of developers building high-end applications for Vision Pro that demonstrate its hardware capabilities.
