CTOnews.com, July 24 (Xinhua)-- Guangzhou Auto Toyota has laid off some workers at its Chinese plant as it grapples with the challenges of a price war and falling sales in the world's largest auto market, three employees told Reuters.

Employees at ▲ Tuyuan Pexels, who spoke on condition of anonymity for privacy reasons, said GAC Toyota fired some workers over the weekend and offered them compensation, and the affected workers were hired by the labor company and sent to work at the Guangzhou Toyota plant in Guangzhou.

The report said it was not possible to determine how many workers had been laid off, and neither GAC nor Toyota immediately responded to requests for comment. According to the GAC Toyota website, the GAC Toyota plant produces 1 million cars a year and employs about 19000 people to produce Camry, Leiling and bZ4X models.

Japanese brands suffered the biggest decline among Chinese carmakers in the first half of this year, with market share shrinking to 14.9 per cent from nearly 20 per cent a year ago, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. At the same time, Chinese brands account for 53% of total sales.
