CTOnews.com, July 24 (Xinhua)-- Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, seems to have lagged behind its rival TSMC in semiconductor revenue for four consecutive quarters against the backdrop of the continuing global economic downturn, the Korea Herald reported.

▲ Tuyuan Pexels, according to industry insiders, TSMC's second-quarter revenue fell 10% year-on-year to $15.53 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 111.661 billion yuan), slightly higher than market expectations, but still failed to avoid the impact of chip demand decline caused by weak demand for smartphones and other devices.

Although Samsung Electronics reported second-quarter results earlier this month, it did not provide specific figures for each business unit. But market watchers expect sales in the company's chip business (DS) division to be about $10.1 billion-10.8 billion (currently about 72.619 billion-77.652 billion yuan), almost half the $22.1 billion sales in the same period last year (currently about 158.899 billion yuan).

If Samsung's DS division's second-quarter results are in line with market expectations, Samsung has ceded the top spot in chip revenue to TSMC for four consecutive quarters since the third quarter of last year.

Samsung overtook Intel to become the world's number one chipmaker by revenue in 2021, regaining the top spot for the first time in three years, but Samsung's DS division has been weak since the third quarter of last year due to a sharp deterioration in its memory business.

TSMC expects third-quarter revenue to be between $16.7 billion and $17.5 billion (currently about 120.073 billion-125.825 billion yuan). Although experts predict that Samsung may accelerate the profit recovery in the third quarter due to chip production cuts, the company expects sales of 15 trillion-16 trillion won (currently about 83.85 billion-89.44 billion yuan) to be much lower than TSMC.
