CTOnews.com, July 24, according to Nikkei Chinese website, Japanese company Proterial (formerly Hitachi Metal) recently trial-produced an electric vehicle (EV) motor using magnets without rare earth neodymium (CTOnews.com Note: pronounced "female"). The test shows that the motor can ensure the motor output power required for pure electric vehicles.

▲ image source Proterial official website neodymium is widely used in neodymium magnets for pure electric vehicles, but because it is a rare earth element, stable acquisition has become a topic. Proterial announced last year that computer simulations confirmed that ferrite magnets, mainly composed of iron oxide, could also be used in pure electric vehicle motors. Recently, the company has trial-produced this component, and used the trial product to carry out performance tests.

The strength of ferrite magnets related to output power is only about 1/10 of that of neodymium magnets, and there has been no record of actual use in major pure electric vehicle motor manufacturers. Through the innovation of the installation position of the magnet, Proterial developed the technology to improve the output power of the motor, and confirmed that the output power for pure electric vehicles can be obtained through the test of the trial product.

Proterial does not plan to mass-produce motors on its own, but will sell components such as ferrite magnets to motor manufacturers. It aims to get motors using ferrite magnets into pure electric vehicles by 2035 and will launch a marketing campaign.
