CTOnews.com, July 24 (Xinhua) scientists at the University of Sydney in Australia have developed a self-repairing solar panel that can reverse the damage caused by radiation and greatly extend the life of satellites in orbit. The solar panels use perovskite, an oxide mineral containing calcium and titanium, and are known by some as "miracle materials" because of their unique properties.

For decades, satellites have relied on solar panels to use photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity, but some types of radiation cause them to lose up to 10% of their efficiency each year. At this rate, it won't take long for them to become useless space junk.

Scientists have found that the radiation damage of perovskite solar cells can be reversed when heated in a vacuum. Simulation tests on Earth show that inefficient solar panels can return to their original efficiency after heating, and the sun happens to be a perfect space heater.

CTOnews.com noticed that the new satellite was being launched into space at an alarming speed. As of May 2023, SpaceX has deployed more than 4000 Starlink satellites in orbit to provide Internet services, and plans to launch a total of nearly 12000.

However, the breakthrough will not protect satellites and man-made objects from other space threats. Last year, for example, NASA said the James Weber Telescope was hit by a fairly large micrometeor, which caused a "small detectable impact" on the overall performance of the telescope.
