CTOnews.com, July 24, according to TheElec, Samsung and LG show that they are trying to develop OLED panels that can provide higher light efficiency and longer life. The two companies are the world's largest makers of OLED panels for smartphones, tablets, laptops and televisions, and their products are used by multiple brands. Last year, Samsung launched the Eco2 OLED panel, which is more energy-efficient and is now available on Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4.

It is reported that Samsung display and LG display are developing an OLED panel that uses low refractive CPL (overlay). CPL is an extremely thin layer that covers the cathode to reduce the loss of light reflected by nearby electrodes when emitting light. The CPL currently used has high refractive index. If a layer of CPL with low refraction is added, the light loss can be better reduced, thus the light efficiency, energy efficiency and product life can be improved. However, adding low-refractive CPL may further increase the cost and complexity of the OLED panel.

CTOnews.com notes that LG has used a similar technology called MLA (Microlens Array) in its large TV OLED panel. This layer consists of billions of convex lenses that collect light from the luminous layer and prevent it from reflecting around it. As a result, OLED panels with MLA can increase their brightness by 20% while using the same power.

According to reports, Samsung and LG show that they are in talks with their biggest customers, Apple and Samsung MX, the smartphone division. If they agree to use higher-cost OLED panels, LG and Samsung displays can develop OLED panels for phones, tablets and even laptops.

Currently, companies that develop CPL layers for OLED panels are Dongjin Semiconductor, Hodogaya, Labto and PNH Tech. Dongjin Semiconductor, Hodogaya and Labto have approached Samsung display, while PHN Tech is a member of the supply chain shown by LG. These smaller OLED material manufacturers have sent samples to LG and Samsung displays, and if Apple and Samsung MX agree, OLED panels with low refractive CPL layers can begin mass production.

In the future, Samsung is likely to launch smartphones, tablets and laptops with new OLED screens that are brighter, consume less energy and last longer.
