According to van Meel, each generation of M must outperform its predecessor. If BMW can use pure electric powertrain to achieve the performance goals of the new M model, then the next generation of M3 and M4 will be electric models. If not, it will stick to fuel power, but BMW is trying to achieve that in a purely electric way.

Asked if he would offer multiple power options, van Meel quickly dismissed the claim, saying that BMW would prefer to use only one powertrain, which means that BMW's next-generation M model will not offer fuel, electric and hybrid versions at the same time.
