CTOnews.com July 21, AMD CEO Su Zifeng said in an interview with Nikkei Asia in Tokyo, Japan today that AMD is open to contract manufacturers other than TSMC, and the company will "consider other manufacturing capabilities" to produce chips designed by AMD to "ensure that AMD has the most flexible supply chain."

Su Zifeng, Pixabay of ▲ Picture Source, admits that it is not easy to find a suitable alternative because TSMC has always dominated the chip manufacturing industry and has cutting-edge technology. TSMC's competitors include South Korea's Samsung, Taiwan's UMC Electronics and America's Groupon, but Su Zifeng did not disclose the names of any manufacturers.

Su Zifeng is also open to using TSMC's factories outside Taiwan, including TSMC's Arizona plant in the United States: "in fact, all parts of the world, including the United States and Japan, are accelerating the development of manufacturing. I think this is a good thing. We hope to use manufacturing plants in different regions to provide us with some flexibility."

Su Zifeng also talked about the current popularity of generative AI in an interview. "there are great opportunities in the field of artificial intelligence using GPU, so we have greatly increased our resources, and AI is now the highest priority of AMD," she said.

AMD predicts that the semiconductor market used to accelerate data centers will grow by about 50 per cent to $150 billion over the next three to four years, driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 1.08 trillion yuan).

When asked about AMD's strategy to compete with Nvidia, Mr Su stressed that in some areas of AI development, AMD's technology and knowledge would be more competitive than Nvidia: "AI will have many winners and there is more than one solution. In areas such as reasoning workloads (the process by which AI evaluates and understands new information based on previously processed data), AMD believes it has the 'most powerful solution'."
