Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, July 20, according to some technical details revealed by Tesla during the second quarter earnings call, the much-anticipated Cybertruck electric pickup will use a more advanced and energy-intensive version of the 4680 battery, which has previously been used in the Model Y factory in Texas.

Drew Baglino, senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering for Tesla, says the Cybertruck 4680 battery unit in Texas has a 10 per cent increase in energy density compared to currently produced battery units. This is achieved through "process and mechanical design optimization", he said.

Considering that the energy density of the existing 4680 battery is comparable to that of the 2170 battery currently used in most Tesla models, the 10% increase is significant, and it is worth noting that Tesla has been reported to be developing a high-nickel version of the 4680 battery.

The increase in the energy density of the 4680 battery unit may mean that the Cybertruck will have a higher mileage, or it may allow Tesla to use a relatively more compact battery pack, which provides the same mileage as a low energy density battery pack. Tesla has not yet disclosed how the increase in energy density will benefit consumers.

CTOnews.com noted that there is more good news about Tesla's 4680 battery. Drew Baglino said that as a result of "significant progress" in improving the yield of the 4680 battery production line, the Texas plant saw an 80 per cent increase in battery unit production and a 25 per cent reduction in battery COGS (cost of sales) in the second quarter compared with the first quarter. In addition, Baglino reminded Tesla investors that the 4680 team in Texas had produced 10 million battery units last month.

In 4680, Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, unveiled a plan to build his own battery unit for electric vehicles called "2020". But so far, the carmaker has struggled to meet Musk's goals for the production and performance of these battery units.

As for the Cybertruck, Tesla claims to have started preliminary production at a Texas super factory, and the specifications and price of its powertrain are still unknown. Tesla said that the first delivery of the car will begin this year.
