The app, called Thermo Check, measures the temperature of surrounding objects. It uses the infrared temperature sensor built into the watch to collect temperature data through a new skin temperature API. Samsung says users can use the app to "measure the temperature of their surroundings," such as the water they want to swim in or the food they are ready to eat. Because infrared sensors are used, temperature readings can be obtained without contact with objects.

CTOnews.com notes that Samsung currently uses the sensor only for period tracking and a few other data, but even with the new app, users still don't seem to be able to get readings of their skin temperature at all times.

The Thermo Check app will launch first with "upcoming Galaxy Watch devices," namely the Galaxy Watch 6 series, and then the app will also be available for Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro. Samsung will hold an Unpacked event on July 26, when the Galaxy Watch 6 smartwatch will be officially released.
