Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com July 20 news, according to BusinessKorea reported that with the battery technology development cycle is getting shorter and shorter, the battery technology competition between China, Japan and South Korea is becoming increasingly fierce. Ningde Times, the world's No.1 battery manufacturer with market share, recently registered a battery technology patent in just 39 days, according to industry sources.

▲ According to Pexels data, from 2011 to 2020, LG Energy Solution ranked first among global battery enterprises with 15318 patent applications, Samsung SDI ranked second with 8157, Panasonic Energy, Tesla's main battery supplier, ranked fourth with 6104, and Ningde Times ranked seventh with 2397.

The report pointed out that Korean companies have been working to obtain patents for nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cathode materials for high-capacity batteries, while Chinese companies have focused on applying for patents for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials, which are cheap but highly stable. There has also been an increase in patent applications for silicon anode materials in China, which perform better than traditional graphite cathodes.

Japan is ahead of China and South Korea in commercializing lithium-ion batteries, but its market share is dwarfed by China and South Korea. So Japan is eager to change the rules of the game by commercializing all-solid-state batteries. CTOnews.com previously reported that Toyota announced in June that it plans to commercialize electric vehicles powered by all-solid-state batteries by 2027, which can greatly improve battery reliability.

The report also pointed out that as technology competition between China, Japan and South Korea intensifies, the three countries are expanding their fronts to global markets such as Europe and the United States. At present, China, Japan and South Korea jointly control more than 90% of the global battery market, so it is very important to apply for patents to ensure overseas patents. Especially in the field of battery materials, Japan has been actively applying for patent registration overseas. In the past 10 years, the proportion of overseas patent applications by Japan's six major materials companies has reached 62% of its total applications, compared with 33% of overseas applications by South Korea's seven major companies.

As battery technology expands in scope, obtaining patents is becoming increasingly important. Kim Dong-wook, senior researcher at Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), said: "Lithium batteries were originally used in small electronic devices such as portable cameras and laptops in Japan, but due to the emergence of electric vehicles, the application of lithium batteries has greatly expanded. This also makes patent applications more necessary. Experts also expect battery technology to be applied to a wider range of fields in the future, such as aircraft, trains and ships.
