Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
The U.S. government aims to purchase 9500 electric vehicles by 2023, but it almost faces supply problems and rising costs, according to a federal report released Wednesday. This target is almost three times the number of purchases in the previous budget year.
The 26 agencies that have approved electric vehicle procurement plans are estimated to need more than $470 million for vehicles and nearly $300m for the design and installation of necessary infrastructure and other costs, according to the Government Accountability Office.
The purchase cost of these vehicles will be nearly $200 million higher than those of the lowest-priced gasoline vehicles. These agencies account for more than 99 per cent of the federal fleet, excluding the United States Postal Service (USPS), an independent federal entity.
Us government agencies face obstacles in expanding their purchases of electric vehicles and are not sure whether trams can meet all demand.
The Department of Transportation told the US Government Accountability Office that it initially wanted to order 430 electric vehicles in 2022, but partly because manufacturers cancelled orders, the order was reduced to 292.
Us Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials told the US Government Accountability Office that they did not believe that electric vehicles could support law enforcement equipment or carry out law enforcement tasks in extreme environments, the report said.
In December 2021, the President of the United States issued an executive order instructing the government to stop buying fuel vehicles by 2035. The presidential order also instructs that light vehicles purchased by federal agencies must be trams or hybrids by 2027, involving 380000 federal vehicles and about 45000 vehicles a year, although the order does not apply to the United States Postal Service.
In the 12 months to September 30, 2022, federal purchases of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles quintupled, from 1 per cent of vehicle purchases in 2021 to 12 per cent of light vehicle purchases in 2022, a total of 3567 vehicles.
In May, the US Postal Service said it expected to receive the next generation of delivery vehicles in June 2024, nine months behind schedule.
