CTOnews.com, July 20, St today announced the launch of a FlightSense multi-area ToF ranging sensor with a field of view angle of 90 °, which is 33% larger than that of the previous generation, and is used in home automation, home appliances, computers, robots and intelligent devices used in stores, factories and other places.

According to reports, unlike some dedicated camera sensors, this model of VL53L7CX time-of-flight (ToF) sensor does not capture images, so it can ensure the privacy and security of users.

The VL53L7CX expands the angle of view to 90 °(diagonal), which claims to be "almost camera level", enhancing the perception of the perimeter of the scene and improving presence detection and system activation performance, such as activating the screen or waking up ovens, coffee makers, and other devices.

Italian Semiconductor officials said that VL53L7CX can achieve 3D scene imaging and simultaneously measure the distance of multiple objects in multiple areas. Because of its multi-area ranging function and motion indicator, the sensor can be used in the fields of personnel detection and tracking, back peeping warning, space occupation detection, and warehousing / parking management.

The new sensor can also track full and empty trash bins, improving the performance of applications such as intelligent garbage management systems. It can also improve the floor sensing, cliff prediction, obstacle avoidance and small object detection performance of the robot. Other applications include projector trapezoid correction and the use of the STGesture software package to improve gesture recognition and expand the range of hand tracking.

In terms of hardware parameters, VL53L7CX has 64 original (8 x 8) sensing areas, which can measure the distance of multiple objects in each area, and the maximum measurement distance is 8750px. STSemiconductor's patented histogram algorithm can detect and measure multiple objects in the angle of view, and its anti-stain ability is better than that of 1500px.

In low power mode, the power consumption of the sensor is 5.4mW. In addition, VL53L7CX can support autonomous operation mode, allowing the master system to turn off power and wake up the system only when the threshold is reached. The threshold includes the distance of the nearest object, the signal rate and the detection of moving objects. The pins and drivers of the new sensor are compatible with the previous generation device VL53L5CX.

VL53L7CX is now in production with a miniature optical LGA16 package of 6.4mm x 3.0mm x 1.6mm, starting at $3.60 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 26 yuan).
