CTOnews.com July 20 news, according to The Information report, Meta in order to compete with Apple's Vision Pro headset, is accelerating the VR / AR headset project, but the finished product will not be released until 2027.

Apple's Vision ProMeta company tried to curb Apple's attention by launching the Quest 3 headset a few days before Apple released the Vision Pro.

CTOnews.com quoted the media report that Meta had planned to order Plessey's microLED screen, but because the latter could not develop a bright enough screen, the deal basically failed.

Meta abandoned Plessey's microLED screens and instead worked on proven and lower-cost liquid crystal on silicon (LCos) technology, the report said.

Meta Quest ProMeta has announced a four-year development plan, saying it plans to upgrade Quest 3 headsets by the end of 2023; internally develop AR headsets codenamed Orion in 2024; and launch consumer AR headsets codenamed Artemis in 2027.

Meta has cut back on Artemis headsets, using glass instead of silicon carbide, and reducing the headsets 'field of view.

Meta's AR headset was originally designed to have a field of view of 70 degrees, but the headset now planned for launch in 2027 will be the same as Microsoft's HoloLens and Magic Leap headsets, only 50 degrees, compared with Apple's Vision Pro headsets with a field of view of 120 degrees.

The compromises Meta has made over the past 12 months include eliminating LiDAR functionality altogether and a projector that allows multiple people to see AR / VR objects simultaneously.
