CTOnews.com, July 19 (Xinhua)-- Electric vehicles often need more chips than petrol vehicles because of their high integration and software functionality. As car companies such as Stellantis turn to the field of electric vehicles, the need for this is also growing rapidly.

Stellantis predicts that the risk of a shortage of semiconductor chips "will increase dramatically" over the next few years because of growing demand for electric vehicles.

Stellantis announced on Tuesday that it was implementing a long-term strategy to ensure the supply of semiconductors, including completing transactions worth 10 billion euros (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 80.7 billion yuan) and producing its own microchips by 2030.

Stellantis said the deals would play a key role in its electric vehicle platform and artificial intelligence software. In addition to buying semiconductors, Stellantis will also work with aiMotive and SiliconAuto to develop its own chips.

Over the past two years, the diversity of automotive semiconductors has meant that "we have multiple problems, and once a topic is resolved, a new topic will emerge," said Joachim Kahmann, who is in charge of semiconductor procurement at the Jeep manufacturer. As Stellantis shifts to electric vehicles that require more complex chips and general-purpose platforms, any shortage "could affect not just one or two of our factories, but five, six or seven.

He pointed out that the current chip situation has "greatly improved" and there is sufficient supply in the second half of the year, but it is only a matter of time before the next shortage occurs.

To reduce the risk of out-of-stock, Stellantis is signing agreements with Infineon, NXP Semiconductor and Qualcomm and is building a semiconductor database that includes order plans for the next few years.

The company announced a plan last month to launch an electric car that costs less than 25000 euros (currently about 202000 yuan) early next year.
