CTOnews.com, July 18 (Reuters)-the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Tuesday that it was launching a new special investigation into a fatal accident in California involving a 2018 Tesla Model 3, suspected of using an advanced driving assistance system.

Since 2016, NHTSA has conducted special investigations into more than 30 Tesla accidents suspected of using advanced driving assistance systems such as Autopilot, resulting in a total of 20 deaths.

In addition, in March this year, NHTSA said it was launching a new special investigation into a fatal February accident in California involving Tesla Model S, suspected of using advanced driving assistance systems.

CTOnews.com noted that the agency was also investigating a collision between a 2014 Tesla car and a fire engine in Contra Costa County, California. A Tesla crashed into their fire engine, killing Tesla's driver on the spot, the local fire department said.

In December last year, NHTSA said it had launched a new special investigation into two Tesla accidents suspected of using advanced driving assistance systems.

Each year, NHTSA typically conducts special investigations into more than 100 accidents involving emerging technologies and other potential car safety problems, which have helped to develop safety rules on areas such as airbags.
