CTOnews.com July 18, 2016-According to a new study, artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT can compete with the top 1% of most creative humans.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Montana who used the Torrance Creativity Test (TTCT) to assess performance on ChatGPT, a commonly used creativity test. They asked ChatGPT eight questions and recorded its answers. They also collected answers from 24 University of Montana students and compared them to answers from 2700 students nationwide who participated in TTCT. All responses were scored by the Academic Testing Service, which was unaware that AI responses were being scored.

The results showed that the AI answers were as creative as the most creative answers given by the human participants. In fact, ChatGPT outperformed most students nationwide. CTOnews.com notes that this finding surprised study author Eric Guzik, assistant clinical professor at the University of Montana's School of Business, who says,"To me, creativity is about doing things differently. One of my favorite definitions of entrepreneurship is that being an entrepreneur means thinking differently. So AI might help us apply creative thinking to business and innovation processes, which is very interesting to me. "

TTCT consists of two different assessments: a linguistic assessment and a graphical assessment. Both measure divergent thinking, the thought process used to generate ideas. In the language assessment, the tester is provided with pictures and/or verbal cues and asked to answer in writing. For example, they might show a picture of an event and ask to speculate on the outcome. Or they might show off a product and ask for ways to improve it. Their answers were used to assess three psychological traits:

Fluency: Number of related ideas

The unusual degree of originality of an idea

Flexibility: Diversity of different types of ideas

The graphical assessment requires the tester to draw pictures to answer questions. For example, they may be asked to complete a picture.

In this study, ChatGPT reached the highest percentile for both fluency and originality. In flexibility, its score dropped to the 97th percentile.

Guzik doesn't want to overstate ChatGPT's impact on the economy, but he does think it will be a driver of innovation.
