CTOnews.com, July 18 (Xinhua) Tesla plans to double the size of his factory near Berlin to produce up to 1 million electric vehicles a year, an expansion that could make Tesla's Berlin Super Factory the largest car manufacturer in Germany.

Tesla has outlined their further plans for the German factory, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Tesla has applied for approval to expand his existing plant in the eastern German state of Brandenburg to increase car and battery capacity, according to documents submitted to local officials in recent days.

Tesla began producing Model Y at the plant on the outskirts of Berlin early last year. Tesla tweeted in March that the factory's daily output had reached 5000 vehicles.

Tesla has received preliminary approval to carry out some modifications to the plant, but full approval has yet to complete an environmental impact study that will depend on the views of local residents, who will be able to raise objections online this week.

In response to potential environmental problems, a spokesman for Tesla said that the expansion does not require additional fresh water from local sources, as the plant has wastewater recycling facilities that can provide additional water for increased production. The spokesman added that the proposed expansion would increase the number of employees of the plant from the current more than 10,000 to about 22500.

Tesla has been making electric cars at the Glenn Hyde superfactory near Berlin since March last year. The annual production capacity of the first phase is only 500000 vehicles, and the target has not yet been achieved.

At present, Tesla's Berlin factory has about 10000 employees. Since its opening in March 2022, the plant's capacity has been increasing, with weekly production reaching 5000 vehicles in March 2023, which can be inferred to reach more than 250000 vehicles a year.

At the end of March this year, Tesla confirmed that it had added a third shift at the Berlin superfactory, which helped the company achieve its weekly production capacity of 5000 cars a week.

According to previous reports from CTOnews.com, Tesla is trying to add a fourth production shift to the Berlin superfactory to double its weekly production from 5000 to 10,000, reaching an annual production rate of 500000 cars as soon as possible.
