CTOnews.com, July 17 (Xinhua)-- according to a new study released by the American Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS), small cars and muscle cars are the deadliest vehicles on the road, with a much higher accident death rate than other types of vehicles.

David Harkey, chairman of IIHS, said the high death rate among drivers of small cars is due to their poor protection, especially in collisions with larger and heavier SUV and pick-up trucks. He also pointed out that the image and marketing of muscle cars can also affect the risk of accidents.

CTOnews.com notes that IIHS's research is based on deaths involving 2020 or early models of the same style and function that occurred in the United States between 2018 and 2021. The study did not take into account factors that might affect mortality, such as driving speed and mileage per day.

"overall, the new cars are much safer than those in the past," said Chuck Farmer, vice president of research and statistical services at IIHS. "but unfortunately, there are still significant differences in the level of protection between different models. And speeding-related deaths have also increased during the outbreak, which may be why we find that many muscle cars perform worst during this period."
