Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, July 17 (Xinhua) Last month, the European Parliament passed a new regulation requiring that batteries in all household appliances and consumer electronics, including mobile phones and game consoles, should be "easily removed and replaced" by consumers, which will come into effect in 2027. Just when people thought that removable batteries were expected to return to mobile phone products, foreign media winfuture poured cold water.

▲ Apple iPhone14/14 Plus reported that the new EU rules do not apply to all mobile phones because they include some exemption conditions. For example, if the battery is of high quality, the manufacturer can still use a non-removable design, which requires the mobile phone battery to provide at least 83 per cent of the original capacity after 1000 cycles and 80 per cent after 1000 cycles.

▲ Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 it is worth mentioning that waterproof equipment does not apply to this regulation, as the detachable design greatly increases the difficulty of waterproofing the product. At present, most flagship phones on the market are equipped with a certain degree of waterproofing, including folding screen phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4.

Due to too many exemption provisions, overseas netizens are not optimistic about the launch of the new regulation, and some netizens said bluntly that the new EU regulation will not change the status quo of mobile phone products.

CTOnews.com attached the core requirements of the new EU bill:

Electric vehicle batteries, light vehicle batteries (LMT) and rechargeable industrial batteries with a capacity exceeding 2kWh must carry a carbon footprint statement and label

Electric vehicle batteries, light vehicle batteries and rechargeable industrial batteries with more than 2kWh capacity must have digital battery passports.

Household appliances and consumer electronic products need to use portable batteries that consumers can easily disassemble and replace themselves.

Stricter waste collection targets: 45% for portable batteries by 2023, 63% for 2027, 73% for 2030, 51% for LMT batteries, 61% for 2031

The lowest level of material recovery from waste batteries: lithium 50% in 2027, 80% in 2031, cobalt, copper, lead and nickel 90% in 2027, 95% in 2031

The lowest level of waste recovery components used in the manufacture of new batteries: cobalt 16%, lead 85%, lithium 6%, nickel 6% eight years after the regulation came into force, and 26% cobalt, 85% lead, 12% lithium and 15% nickel after 13 years of entry into force.
