CTOnews.com, July 17 (Xinhua)-- governments around the world are considering how to mitigate the dangers posed by emerging AI technologies that could reshape the global economy and change the international landscape.

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council will hold its first formal discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) in New York, and the UK will call for an international dialogue on its impact on global peace and security.

It is worth mentioning that the UK, which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month, has been seeking to play a global leadership role in the regulation of AI. British Foreign Secretary James Clare will chair Tuesday's discussion.

CTOnews.com reported last month that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres thought it was necessary for mankind to establish an international AI watchdog similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and decided to support the proposal.

British Ambassador to the United Nations Barbara Woodward (Barbara Woodward) said earlier that the meeting included a briefing by international AI experts and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

Mr Guterres said publicly last month that scientists and AI experts were calling for global action because AI could pose as much of an existential threat to mankind as the risk of nuclear war. Guterres also suggested that the International Atomic Energy Agency should be used as a model to build a global regulatory body based on expertise and with certain regulatory powers.

Mr Woodward argued that the UK wanted to encourage "a multilateral approach to managing the huge opportunities and risks posed by AI for all" and that "this requires a global effort".

Woodward also believes that the benefits of AI are enormous, with the potential to help United Nations development projects, improve humanitarian assistance operations, assist peacekeeping operations and support conflict prevention, and may also help narrow the gap between developing and developed countries. But she also stressed that AI also has serious security problems that must be addressed, such as its use in autonomous control of weapons or the manipulation of nuclear weapons.
