CTOnews.com, July 16 (Xinhua)-- ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chat robot developed by OpenAI, can have natural language conversations with users, and even help users with homework and research. It is considered to be one of the fastest-growing technology products in history, but recently there has been a decline in traffic.

According to data released by Similarweb and others earlier this month, global desktop and mobile web traffic on ChatGPT's chat.openai.com fell 9.7% from May to June, the number of unique users visiting ChatGPT fell 5.7%, and the amount of time users spent on the site fell 8.5% in May. In addition, the wastage rate of ChatGPT, the proportion of users who have stopped using the service, has soared to about 20 per cent.

This anomaly has sparked speculation in the tech world about why the chat robot is no longer so popular. One conjecture is striking: millions of students have had their summer vacation recently, so they don't need ChatGPT to learn (cheat) for the time being. If so, when students reopen in the fall, they will log back into ChatGPT and let it write papers and think for them, and traffic will resume.

In response, Mark Schumlick, a top Internet analyst at Bernstein Research, said that if the drop in traffic is due to student holidays, it means that the use of ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence chatbots is limited. In other words, if a large part of ChatGPT growth is driven by student cheating, it means that the technology, or at least the form of chat robots, will not be the dominant computing platform in the future.

However, CTOnews.com notes that according to Similarweb, traffic to OpenAI's developer platform sites increased by 3.1% from May to June. Microsoft's Bing search site (which also integrates some of OpenAI's technologies) also received more visits in June than in May.
