CTOnews.com, July 16 (Reuters)-Xiaomi India President Muralikrishnan B said that after years of strong bets on online ecommerce, Xiaomi will focus on increasing sales in offline channels such as Indian retail stores to seek to revive smartphone sales.

▲ Touyuan Xiaomi India official website in recent years, through Amazon, Wal-Mart, Flipkart and other e-commerce channels, Xiaomi and other companies have been able to expand rapidly in the Indian market, which has 600 million smartphone users. However, while 44 per cent of smartphone sales in India currently come from online sales, the offline physical market still accounts for a larger share, which Xiaomi expects to grow further.

Muralikrishnan B said: "our offline market position is much lower than online, but other competitors are doing quite well offline and have a larger market share."

According to Counterpoint Research, only 34 per cent of Xiaomi's sales in India this year come from retail stores, with the rest from online websites that have long been its main source of sales. By contrast, 57% of Samsung's sales come from brick-and-mortar stores.

Xiaomi plans to further expand its existing network of 18000 Indian retail stores and sell more other products with partners, such as Xiaomi TVs or security cameras, because these products are less competitive. Muralikrishnan B also said Xiaomi would solve the problem that Xiaomi found that some partner stores put its bright orange brand LOGO outside the store, but showed competitors' brands more prominently in the store.

Xiaomi is planning to hire more salespeople, with the goal of tripling the number of salespeople from early 2023 to 12000 by the end of next year.

CTOnews.com previously reported that Xiaomi entered India in 2014 and rose rapidly in the third quarter of 2018, making it the number one smartphone brand in India. But in recent months, due to a significant decline in low-end phone sales, Xiaomi currently has 16% of the Indian mobile phone market, while Samsung has overtaken Xiaomi with 20%.
