CTOnews.com, July 16 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- Cruise, the self-driving technology division of US auto giant General Motors, submitted a petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in February 2022 for permission to deploy up to 2500 unmanned self-driving cars a year without steering wheels, rearview mirrors, steering lights or wipers and other equipment for human drivers. NHTSA's acting director, Ann Carlson, said on Wednesday that the agency would make a decision on the petition in the coming weeks.

"the core question is whether cars driven by computers rather than humans need to comply with safety standards related to human drivers, such as rearview mirrors, sunscreens, wipers, etc.," Carlson said. Cruise declined to comment.

Cruise currently offers a limited service in San Francisco, using a small number of Chevrolet Bolt cars equipped with self-driving technology. Cruise wants to deploy its Origin car, which has subway-like doors and no steering wheel.

CTOnews.com noted that GM petitioned NHTSA in 2018 to allow a Chevrolet Bolt-based car without a steering wheel or brake pedal on American roads. In 2020, GM withdrew its petition because the agency did nothing.

In December 2021, NHTSA launched a formal safety investigation of cars made by Cruise with self-driving systems after two reports of injuries caused by rear-end collisions. NHTSA said Cruise's car "may brake improperly or stop running."
