The service, called Stable Doodle, uses the latest Stable Diffusion models to analyze the contours of sketches and generate "visually pleasing" works of art.

The service is already available to users through the ClipDrop platform, a platform acquired by Stability AI in March and formerly known as Init ML, an AI startup founded by former Google employees.

Stability AI revealed in a blog post that Stable Doodle is aimed at professionals and novices, no matter how familiar they are with AI tools. "with Stable Doodle, anyone with basic painting skills and Internet access can generate high-quality original images in a matter of seconds."

There are many AI tools for sketch-to-image conversion on the market, including open source projects. But Stability AI claims that Stable Doodle is unique in that it allows users to have more "precise" control over the image generation process. Stable Doodle is driven by a Stable Diffusion model Stable Diffusion XL and a "conditional control solution" T2I-Adapter developed by the Applied Research Center (ARC), a research and development department of Tencent, which not only allows Stable Diffusion XL to accept sketches as input, but also guides the model to better fine-tune the output of works of art. Stability AI explained in a blog post, "T2I-Adapter enables Stable Doodle to understand the outline of the sketch and generate images based on the contours and prompts defined by the model."

In addition to sketches, Stable Doodle also accepts input prompts to guide the image generation process, such as "a comfortable chair, 'equiaxed' style" or "cat in denim jacket, 'digital art' style. However, there are limits to customization, and Stable Doodle currently supports only 14 art styles.

Stability AI envisions Stable Doodle as a tool for designers, illustrators and other professionals to "save valuable time" and "improve efficiency". At the same time, the company cautioned that the quality of the output image depends on the details of the initial painting, the descriptive nature of the prompts and the complexity of the scene depicted. "in the future, Stable Doodle will allow users to import sketches. In addition, we will provide use cases for specific areas, including real estate applications," the company said.

Stable Doodle is free, but with restrictions. Stability AI is looking for new sources of revenue, and it was reported in April that Stability AI was burning money, leading it to look for executives to help boost sales. Last month Stability AI raised $25 million through convertible notes, or debt converted into equity, bringing its total to more than $125 million.
