CTOnews.com, July 16 (Xinhua)-- researchers at Harvard University say they have found a chemical compound that can reverse aging, which may lead to a "fountain of youth" medicine. The study was published in the July issue of Aging Medical Journal, and Harvard researcher David Sinclair shared the findings in a series of tweets this week.

CTOnews.com noted that Sinclair explained the findings in his 17 tweets, saying: "We have previously shown that aging can be reversed by activating embryonic genes through gene therapy. Now we have shown that this can also be achieved through chemical mixtures, which is a step towards affordable whole-body regenerative medicine."

Each chemical mixture contains five to seven ingredients, many of which have been used to treat other physical and mental illnesses. For example, prescription drugs such as valproic acid, trazodone and praxol have emerged in several mixtures, which have been successfully used to treat epilepsy, depression and Parkinson's disease.

Sinclair, a professor of genetics and author of Lifespan, says he and his team at Harvard Medical School spent more than three years looking for molecules that can combine to reverse cell aging and rejuvenate human cells. By experimenting with mice and monkeys, they successfully identified six chemical mixtures that could "reverse" visual signs of aging in "less than a week".

"Studies on the optic nerve, brain tissue, kidneys and muscles have shown promising results, improving vision and longevity in mice and, most recently, in monkeys in April," Sinclair said. "

Sinclair pointed out that they are preparing for human clinical trials of the treatment, and acknowledged that other researchers are also competing to "prove that chemicals can rejuvenate cells like gene therapy."
