CTOnews.com news on July 14, the National Food Safety risk Assessment Center today responded to the results of the aspartame assessment released by relevant international agencies, saying that the use of aspartame in accordance with China's current standards and norms can ensure safety.

The National Food Safety risk Assessment Center says the cancer risk of carcinogens is usually determined by two factors. One is carcinogenic ability. According to human epidemiological investigation and case report, animal experiments and biological mechanism research, IARC divides the intensity of carcinogenic evidence into 1 category, 2A, 2B and 3 categories (of which 1 is of human carcinogenicity, 2A is likely to be carcinogenic to human, 2B is carcinogenic to human but lack of sufficient scientific evidence, and 3 are not yet classified).

Another factor is the level of exposure, which refers to the mass of the harmful substance actually ingested or exposed to the human body. IARC listed aspartame as a class 2B possible carcinogen, indicating that the scientific evidence of its carcinogenicity to humans is not sufficient and further research is needed. Through the control and management of its dosage, the safety of its use can be guaranteed.

The National Food Safety risk Assessment Center and the National Cancer Center conduct a safety assessment combined with the latest assessment results of JECFA and the consumption situation of Chinese residents. Aspartame can be used in accordance with China's current standards and norms to ensure safety. The National Food Safety risk Assessment Center will continue to follow the risk assessment developments of organizations such as IARC and JECFA and national responses and initiatives to ensure the bottom line of food safety through the most stringent standards and regulation.

CTOnews.com previously reported that the Joint expert Committee on Food Additives of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (JECFA) released an assessment of the health effects of the sugar-free sweetener aspartame.

The results of the assessment showed that the International Agency for Research on Cancer cited "limited evidence" for human carcinogenicity and classified aspartame as one of the possible carcinogens to humans (IARC Group 2B). The Joint expert Committee reaffirmed its daily allowable intake of 40 mg per kilogram of body weight.
