CTOnews.com July 14, Microsoft Design (Microsoft Design) team today posted a blog post on the Medium platform, announcing that 15 years later, Microsoft Office's existing default font Calibri finally has a successor-Aptos.

Microsoft launched the Office default font transformation program in 2021, hoping to replace the outdated Calibri as the default font, and proposed five candidate fonts.

Microsoft has been collecting feedback from users over the past two years. According to a wide range of user surveys, Aptos fonts were found to be the most popular among users, and eventually chose it as the default font for Office.

Si Daniels, chief project manager of Microsoft Design, explained the design concept in a blog post, which CTOnews.com translated as follows:

Aptos is similar to Swiss typesetting in the middle of the 20th century in that it is sans serif. Sans serif usually have simple letter forms, or even strokes, and they are easy to read.

Aptos consists of different geometric shapes, which are bold, clear, instructive, and limited. It expresses many different languages and tones. The subtle circular squares in the outline of the letters are highly readable even on small screens.
