Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens for the delivery of clues about the past. CTOnews.com, July 13, according to the official WeChat account of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Wang Meng of Sun Yat-sen University discovered nickel oxide superconductors at liquid nitrogen temperature for the first time. This is the first new high temperature superconducting system discovered by Chinese scientists in the world, and it is also the second unconventional superconducting material discovered by human beings in liquid nitrogen temperature region.

Sun Yat-sen University said that the achievement has also achieved a "from 0 to 1" breakthrough in the field of basic research, and is expected to promote the cracking of the mechanism of high temperature superconductors, make it possible to design and predict high temperature superconducting materials, and achieve more extensive and large-scale industrial applications. The relevant results have been published in the latest issue of the journal Nature.

Superconducting materials have the special properties of absolute zero resistance, complete diamagnetism and macroscopic quantum tunneling effect, so they have important scientific and application value. Since its discovery, five related Nobel Prizes have been awarded. Chinese scientists have also won two national first-class natural science awards and one national top science and technology award for breakthroughs in the field of superconductivity.

Copper oxide superconducting material was first discovered in 1986, and then scientists from many countries, including Chinese scientists, raised its superconducting temperature to the liquid nitrogen temperature range (77 Kelvin, minus 196 degrees Celsius). The cheap and easy availability of liquid nitrogen promotes the application of copper oxide high temperature superconducting materials in the fields of information technology, biomedicine, scientific instruments, electric power, transportation and so on.

In 2008, Japanese scientists discovered superconductivity in an iron-arsenic-based material. Soon, Chinese scientists synthesized a variety of iron-arsenic materials, raised the superconducting temperature of the bulk up to 55K, and promoted its application, but failed to enter the liquid nitrogen temperature range.

So far, copper oxide is still the only unconventional superconducting material in the liquid nitrogen temperature region. "scientists have mastered many experimental phenomena and laws in the study of copper oxide superconductivity, but the causal relationship between copper oxide and high temperature superconductivity cannot be determined." Zhang Guangming, a professor at Tsinghua University, said that the mechanism of high temperature superconductivity is still unknown and has become one of the most important scientific issues in physics in the past 40 years.

According to Sun Yat-sen University, Chinese scientists have discovered superconducting nickel oxides at liquid nitrogen temperature for the first time, which means that it has opened up a new field for the world's superconducting research and will lead the direction of superconducting research. The paper has also been highly appraised by Nature magazine reviewers, saying that it is "of outstanding importance", "is a groundbreaking discovery" and "will be widely concerned by the industry".
