CTOnews.com, July 13, German auto parts supplier Bosch said today that it will invest nearly 2.5 billion euros (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 19.85 billion yuan) in hydrogen fuel cell technology from 2021 to 2026, and expects to generate sales of about 5 billion euros (currently about 39.7 billion yuan) by 2030. The plan is 1 billion euros (currently about 7.94 billion yuan) more than the previous investment plan for 2021-2024.

▲ Pexels Bosch predicts that by 2030, 1/5 of new trucks weighing 6 tons or more will be equipped with fuel cell power systems.

Bosch said its fuel cell power modules had begun production at the Stuttgart-Feuerbach plant in Germany and the Chongqing plant in China. This module uses hydrogen to power vehicles and is mainly used in commercial long-distance scenarios.

Nikola will be a pilot customer for the Stuttgart-Feuerbach manufacturing module and is expected to launch an 8-stage hydrogen fuel cell electric truck for the North American market in the third quarter of 2023.

Daimler trucks plan to market hydrogen-fueled trucks after 2025 and form a joint venture with Volvo to develop zero-emission technology. Stellantis also said this year that it would start delivering the first hydrogen fuel cell-powered medium trucks to Europe. By contrast, Traton, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, focuses on the development of traditional battery electric technology.

CTOnews.com has previously reported that hydrogen fuel cell cars can refuel in minutes and have much longer mileage than pure electric vehicles. However, the lack of hydrogen infrastructure and low energy efficiency hinder the popularization of hydrogen fuel cell technology.
