CTOnews.com July 13 news, Germany Brandenburg Environment Ministry announced that Tesla is planning to expand Berlin super factory, the goal is to double its annual production capacity to 1 million vehicles. At present, the company has initiated the public consultation required for the approval process.

From July 19 to September 18, German citizens can participate in the project online and express their concerns to the government. In addition, the German government will hold a debate in Elkner City Hall from October 23 to review various matters of this expansion plan.

Tesla has been producing electric cars at its Glenhead superplant near Berlin since March last year. The first phase has an annual production capacity of only 500,000 vehicles, and this target has not yet been achieved.

Tesla's Berlin plant currently employs about 10000 people. Since its opening in March 2022, the plant has continuously increased its production capacity, reaching 5000 units per week in March 2023, which is expected to reach more than 250,000 units per year.

At the end of March, Tesla confirmed that it had added a third shift inside the Berlin Superplant, which helped the company achieve weekly production of 5000 cars per week.

According to CTOnews.com, Tesla is trying to double its weekly production from 5000 vehicles to 10,000 vehicles by adding a fourth production shift at the Berlin superplant, reaching the production speed of 500,000 vehicles per year as soon as possible.

German environmentalists often express their concerns about Tesla's superplant, which is partly located in a water conservation area. The expansion will require not only new environmental approvals from the state, but also more hydropower resources.

Tesla plans to build another area to store more parts and also plans to "optimize established production facilities" to increase its battery capacity from 50GWh per year to 100GWh per year in the future, the government said.
