CTOnews.com, July 12 (Xinhua)-- Japan's personal Information Protection Committee announced today that it has provided administrative guidance to Toyota Motor Company under the personal Information Protection Law, Reuters reported. A subsidiary of Toyota has previously raised concerns about the disclosure of customer data it manages, and the Japanese personal Information Protection Commission has asked Toyota to take necessary and appropriate measures to manage personal data safely.

▲ Picture Source Pixabay in May, Toyota announced that about 2.41 million pieces of Japanese customer data, such as vehicle location information, that Toyota had outsourced to its subsidiary Toyota Connected (TC) may have been compromised. Due to the misconfiguration of the cloud environment, these data have been available to the public on the Internet for nearly a decade since 2012.

Also in May this year, Toyota said customer information in some countries in Asia and Oceania may be allowed to be accessed publicly between October 2016 and May 2023 due to incorrect cloud settings, CTOnews.com previously reported. The information involved includes names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and vehicle identification and registration numbers.

The Japanese personal Information Protection Committee said Toyota did not handle the data correctly due to insufficient training in personal information for employees, and access controls were not properly implemented due to imperfect settings in the cloud environment. Toyota announced measures to prevent such accidents from happening again on July 10.
