CTOnews.com, July 12 (Xinhua) the US government plans to reduce pollution by limiting fuel vehicle emissions and promoting the sale of electric vehicles, but this move has been strongly opposed by Toyota and Stellantis.

The two carmakers said the plan would force aggressive and unrealistic sales of electric vehicles, putting pressure on the supply of key products such as batteries.

According to the latest plan in the United States, electric vehicles will account for 67% of sales of new light vehicles and 46% of sales of new medium-sized vehicles in 2032.

In comments to the federal government, Toyota and Stellantis warned that the proposed emission limits for cars and light trucks were too optimistic and discriminated against plug-in hybrid models, Bloomberg reported.

Toyota said the White House proposal "underestimated the key challenges of the battery manufacturing industry, including the scarcity of minerals, the fact that these minerals are not mined or extracted in the United States, inadequate infrastructure and the high cost of electric vehicles".

Stellantis said EPA's expectations for growth in the electric car market were "overly optimistic" and "assumed a 'perfect' transition".

The automaker pointed out that EPA underestimated challenges such as lagging manufacturing capacity and consumer spending, which posed significant risks for the auto industry. "whether these assumptions are true or not, the auto industry must comply with these standards."

It is worth mentioning that Tesla has a very different attitude towards the new rule, arguing that the EPA should adopt stricter requirements and calling for its 2032 electric vehicle penetration target of at least 69 per cent.

Tesla said his internal model predicted that 28 per cent of vehicles sold in 2026 would be zero-emission models, adding that the EPA's "model seriously underestimated Tesla's sales and predicted it to be less than 100000 vehicles a year" (CTOnews.com note: Tesla delivered 880000 new cars in the first half of the year).

In addition, Ford encouraged EPA to relax its requirements in the short term from 2027 to 2029, so that automakers can better transition to the 2032 standard.
