CTOnews.com After five days of intense court proceedings, California judge Jacqueline Scott Corley yesterday denied the FTC's preliminary injunction request, allowing Microsoft to complete its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

While regulators such as CMA believe Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard will hurt consumers or the cloud gaming market, Judge Corley doesn't think so. She made it clear that the deal could hurt Sony, but benefit Call of Duty players and future players.

Activision Blizzard owns World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Candy Crush Legends and other well-known game brands. Microsoft announced in January last year that it would buy Activision Blizzard for 69 billion US dollars (CTOnews.com notes: currently about 498.87 billion yuan), which is the largest acquisition transaction in the history of the game industry.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) argued that the deal would harm competition in the gaming market and undermine innovation and consumer choice, so it filed a preliminary injunction request with the court in March to try to prevent Microsoft from completing the deal before the July 18 deadline.

However, Judge Corley, after hearing testimony and arguments from both parties, found that the FTC had not provided sufficient evidence that the transaction would significantly reduce competition and therefore denied the FTC's request.

Activision Blizzard, meanwhile, reacted to the decision. "Our merger will benefit consumers and workers," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement,"and it will foster competition rather than allow entrenched market leaders to continue to dominate our fast-growing industry." "
