CTOnews.com July 12 news, Samsung Electronics 4 nm process yield has now exceeded 75%, which triggered speculation about Samsung's expansion of semiconductor foundry customers.

On July 11, Hi Investment & Securities researcher Park Sang-woo said in a report: "Samsung Electronics has recently successfully improved the yield of 4nm process" and improved "the possibility of Qualcomm and Nvidia working together again."

Previously, Samsung Electronics foundries had experienced delays in product launch and slow improvement in process yields below 10nm, leading major customers to turn to TSMC. As a result, TSMC's capital expenditure and capacity last year were 3.4 times and 3.3 times higher than Samsung's foundry business, respectively.

In terms of advanced processes below 7nm, TSMC's market share reached 90%, which further widened the gap between the two companies.

With Samsung Electronics '4nm process yield exceeding 75% and 3nm process yield exceeding 60% this year, coupled with the impact of TSMC's price increase, the industry believes that Samsung is expected to recapture customers snatched by TSMC again, and many customers such as Qualcomm and Nvidia have also said that they need to diversify their outsourced production.

According to Samsung Foundry's latest process technology roadmap announced at SFF 2023, the company plans to launch the SF2 process at the 2 nanometer level in 2025 and the SF1.4 process at the 1.4 nanometer level in 2027. At the same time, the company also announced some characteristics of the SF2 process.

CTOnews.com notes that while expanding technology supply, Samsung remains committed to expanding its capacity in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, and Tyler, Texas, USA.

Samsung plans to start mass production of chips on its Pyeongtaek P3 line in the second half of 2023, while the new plant in Taylor City is expected to be completed by the end of this year and operational in the second half of 2024. Samsung's current plan is to increase its cleanroom capacity 7.3 times by 2027 compared to 2021.
