According to CNBC, Google has been developing an artificial intelligence mobile chat robot app for "Generation Z" (born from 1995 to 2009) with interactive digital characters.

However, data show that the company recently "downgraded" the project in an internal restructuring. Generally speaking, when Google downgrades a product, the work is suspended.

Internally known as "Bubble Characters", the app provides users with multiple digital dialogue roles to choose from, making it easy for Gen Z to communicate with them. The company has been developing the project since the fourth quarter of 2021. Google declined to comment.

The description of the app shows that it will be able to engage in "humanoid" conversations and "take action" and will be "attractive to Generation Z." The relevant dialogues are supported by large language models, which can understand and generate dialogue texts similar to human beings through massive data sets.

The application description reads: "the scenes that used to appear only in science fiction are now the next generation of human-level dialogue."

In an example obtained by the media, a cartoon character will have a conversation through a comfortable voice and will be able to ask questions and even provide emotional advice.

In the past few months, Google has developed a series of artificial intelligence projects using large language models, and this "Generation Z" chatbot is one of them. Google executives attach great importance to ChatGPT competitor Bard in its internal restructuring of an organization called Assistant, which specializes in virtual assistant applications or multi-platform two-way dialogue applications. It is reported that on the eve of the release of Bard, some members of the Bubble Characters team were asked to suspend their work and participate in the development of Bard.

At the same time, some of Google's top artificial intelligence researchers chose to leave to start their own chat robot company and secured financing in an otherwise weak investment environment. Character.AI, a developer of companion artificial intelligence chatbots, was founded by two former Google employees, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who received a $150 million investment from Andreessen Horowitz in February.
