In 2021, customers have agreed to allow Tesla to install solar energy system Solar Roof, but Solar Roof suddenly raised the price, causing customer dissatisfaction.

Solar Roof, which was launched in 2016, can generate electricity but looks like tiles rather than solar panels. In order to develop the solar energy business, Tesla bought SolarCity.

The customer who initiated the lawsuit has signed a contract with Tesla to install the Solar Roof system, but the price of the product suddenly increased in 2021, and the total cost of installation increased. The price increase is no small matter! According to one defendant, the total cost under the original contract was about $72000, but the price was increased to $146000.

Tesla raised the price of solar systems at least twice in 2021. It also requires customers who order solar panels or solar roof tiles to order Powerwall home storage systems.

About 8636 households were affected by the end of June, with more than 6300 canceling their Solar Roof contracts with Tesla Tesla Energy because of rising costs and changes in terms, according to court documents. In addition, 1656 Solar Roof contracts were completed at the original price, and by the end of June, 57 customers will install Solar Roof at the original price. In addition, there are 616 customers who have not cancelled their contracts or booked at the original price and will install Solar Roof in the future.

It is estimated that Tesla's Solar Roof solar system will be installed in the United States at about 3000 units between 2016 and early 2023, well below expectations.

Tesla's solar system (including traditional solar panels and roof tiles) was installed in about 48MW in the first quarter of 2022, only half of what it was in the same period in 2021. Why is it reduced? Tesla claimed that it was due to delays in the import of some components, which was beyond the company's control. In the first quarter of this year, Tesla installed about 67MW solar systems, up 40 per cent from a year earlier.

Taking into account the US solar tax credit, the average cost of installing 10KW solar panels is about $20, 000, according to data provided by EnergySage.
