CTOnews.com, July 11 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- Meta has launched a new developer feature called Quest Super Resolution (Quest Super Resolution), which aims to improve the picture quality of VR apps and games on Quest headsets.

According to CTOnews.com, Quest Super Resolution uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon Game Super Resolution (GSR) software technology. The principle of GSR is similar to AMD's FSR 1.0, but it is specifically optimized for Adreno mobile GPU in Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, and only one processing is needed to achieve the best results. This is better than traditional sharpening techniques, but to be clear, it is not an AI system like NVIDIA's DLSS. Meta says it is working on this technology, but it may need future chipsets to achieve it.

Left: none / Center: Normal sharpening / right: Quality sharpening (Super Resolution) Quest Super Resolution will be available in the upcoming v55 Unity Integration SDK. Unity developers will see a new "sharpening type" setting in v55 with two options: Normal and Quality. Quality uses Super Resolution technology, but there is a significant GPU performance footprint, while Normal uses adaptive sharpening of contrast (CAS), which is closer to the traditional sharpening technology. Meta claims that compared to Normal sharpening, Quality (Super Resolution) "avoids the blur and ladder effect caused by bilinear sampling, and provides smoother edge reconstruction and reduced halo effect".

According to Meta, the GPU performance usage of Super Resolution depends on the content. In the applications with simple color and smooth gradient, there will be relatively low GPU performance consumption, and in the applications with rich texture and object details, there will be higher GPU performance consumption.
