CTOnews.com, July 11 (Xinhua)-- American chip giants Nvidia and AMD are competing fiercely in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip market. Both companies have launched a new generation of AI chips this year, namely H100 and MI300, which can be used to train and run complex AI models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

Christopher Danely, a research analyst at Citi, said in a report on Monday that Nvidia would have "at least 90 per cent" of the AI chip market, with AMD in second place.

Danely pointed out that in the previous generation of AI chips (MI250 and A100, respectively), the hardware speed of AMD was about 80% of that of Nvidia, and Nvidia's H100 had a similar advantage over AMD's MI300.

CTOnews.com notes that the analyst also compared the situation to the competition between Intel and AMD in the server market a decade ago. At that time, Intel accounted for more than 90% of the server market with better performance and ecosystem. Whether Nvidia can repeat Intel's glory in the AI chip market remains to be seen.
