Microsoft announced today the official launch of Dev Box after releasing a public preview in August last year.

More than 10,000 engineers worldwide use Dev Box, and some customers already use Dev Box in production environments.

Microsoft initially planned to offer Dev Box in a consumer-price model, charging only at runtime, but some developers wanted to have a monthly price model so it could use Dev Box all the time.

Microsoft said:

To accommodate different use cases, we introduced predictable monthly prices for full-time Dev Boxes on top of consumption-based pay-as-you-go pricing, with a maximum monthly price cap.

This model strikes a balance between the extremes of full consumption or subscription-only pricing, ensuring developers can optimize their spending for both full-time and part-time use cases.

Microsoft says Dev Box was built to save developers time switching between projects and eliminate hours (and sometimes days) wasted installing and configuring the tools needed on different devices.

Dev Box is built on Windows 365 (another Microsoft cloud PC service) and allows developers to access it from any modern Web browser, supporting any IDE, SDK, or tool already running on Windows.

Microsoft said that after the Dev Box service is launched, developers can choose different SKUs according to their needs:

8-core virtual CPU (vCPU)/ 32GB memory

16-core virtual CPU (vCPU)/ 64GB memory

32-core virtual CPU (vCPU)/ 128GB memory
