According to news in the morning of July 11, Beijing time, Mark Lukovsky, head of Google's augmented reality (AR) operating system team, announced his resignation today, mainly because of Google's erratic commitment to AR.

▲ Google AR Glass is well known that Google often launches new efforts and then shuts them down in a relatively short period of time. In 2023 alone, Google ended its support for a variety of services and products.

At the end of 2022, Google announced that it would shut down its cloud gaming service, Stadia. The launch of Stadia in November 2019 marks the beginning of Google's foray into gaming. But at the end of last year, when Google announced the closure of Stadia, it said: "We are sorry for not realizing our vision, but we believe this is the right decision."

Now Google has lost an executive because of a lack of commitment. "I am a senior engineering director at Google, responsible for developing operating systems and software platforms for AR and XR devices," Lukovsky said on Twitter today. "now I have decided to resign mainly because of recent changes in the company's AR leadership team and Google's erratic commitment and vision for AR."

Google has been in the AR market for a long time. Its first product, Google Glass, was launched in 2013, but stopped selling to consumers in 2015. In 2017, Google started selling Glass to corporate customers again, but stopped selling it again last year.

Although Google has never officially announced the launch of a new pair of AR glasses, there are rumors that the company is developing a product that could compete with Apple's MR (mixed reality) Vision Pro, code-named "Project Iris". However, it is reported that the project was cancelled at the beginning of this year.

Analysts said the cancellation of Project Iris was due to a number of factors, including Google's inability to agree on its actual goals or designs, leading to constant adjustments by the team behind the project. The departure of Clay Favor, head of Google's AR business, also dealt a blow to the project. Favo has worked at Google for nearly 20 years.

This time, Lukovsky's departure shows once again that Google has not yet identified AR priorities. Back in 2019, just as Apple's iPad continued to dominate the market, Google cancelled its tablet project. But a few years later, Google launched the Pixel tablet.

Before joining Google, Lukovsky worked at Meta (Oculus VR) as general manager of operating systems for four years. It is not clear what Google's future AR or VR product side plans will be.
