CTOnews.com, July 10 (Reuters)-the European Commission today announced a new data transmission agreement with the United States aimed at ending the legal troubles of thousands of companies that transmit personal data across the Atlantic.
▲ source Pexels the European Supreme Court had previously annulled two agreements to support the transatlantic transmission of personal data on the grounds that it could endanger the data security of EU citizens. The move also led to the need for the European Commission to reach a new agreement with the United States as soon as possible to plug legal loopholes.
The European Commission says the measures taken by the United States ensure that personal data transmitted from Europe to the United States for commercial purposes is fully protected. The new agreement includes binding safeguards, such as restrictions on US intelligence access to EU data "necessary and appropriate" and the establishment of a data protection review court for Europeans. these measures address concerns previously raised by the European Supreme Court.
Didier Reynders, EU justice commissioner, said at a news conference that he was confident that the agreement would withstand any legal challenge: "the principles of the data privacy framework are solid and I believe we have made significant progress in meeting the requirements of the case law of the European Court of Justice. I am very confident to fight and defend the new data agreement."
However, European privacy activist Max Schrems immediately opposed the agreement, saying in a statement: "simply declaring something 'new', 'robust' or 'effective' will not solve the problem before the court. We need to amend US surveillance laws to make this work [to protect European data security] really effective."
Cecilia Bonefield-Dahl, director-general of the Digital European Trade Association, said: "data flow supports the EU's annual export of 1 trillion euros (CTOnews.com Note: about 7.9 trillion yuan) of services to the United States, and the new agreement will give companies more confidence to do business and help Europe's economic growth."
CTOnews.com previously reported that at the end of May, the EU's privacy regulator announced a fine of 1.2 billion euros (currently about 9.48 billion yuan) on Meta for illegally transmitting EU user data to the United States, the highest fine ever imposed by the European Union for privacy violations.
