CTOnews.com, July 10 (Xinhua)-- scientists have discovered a mysterious granite mass 30 miles wide on the far side of the moon, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Nature, suggests that the rock mass may have been linked to volcanic eruptions billions of years ago.

Scientists measured the geothermal activity of the rock mass using microwave frequency and found that it contains radioactive elements that are found only in granite. Granite is a common igneous rock on earth, usually formed by magma cooled after volcanic eruptions.

However, it is unusual to find granite on the moon because the moon has no water and plate tectonics, both of which are important conditions for the formation of granite. "if there is no water, it takes extreme conditions to form granite," said study co-author Matthew Siegler, a professor at Southern Methodist University and a researcher at the Institute of Planetary Science. "so this is a system with no water, no plate tectonics, but granite. Is there water on the moon-at least here? or is it just hot here?"

This study not only provides new clues to the evolutionary history of the moon, but also opens up new possibilities for future exploration. Scientists hope to further study the mysterious granite rock mass to reveal how it was formed and whether it suggests more unknown complex structures inside the moon.
