CTOnews.com, July 9 (Xinhua)-- LoveFrom, the design company of Apple's former design director Jony Ive, has launched a limited edition record player, the Linn Sondek LP12-50, in partnership with British audio brand Linn. The record player, specially designed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Linn's classic record player Sondek LP12, is limited to 250s and sells for as much as $60,000 (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 434000 yuan).

It is reported that the origin of the partnership is that in early 2022, Linn CEO Gillard Tiffenblun (Gilad Tiefenbrun) received Jonathan's invitation on LinkedIn, and the two met and decided to work together to build the commemorative record player, the first hardware project Jonathan has been involved in since leaving Apple.

In the design of this record player, Linn is mainly responsible for sound optimization, such as using a high-density, shock-resistant wood base to reduce the impact of vibration on sound. LoveFrom, on the other hand, pays more attention to the details of industrial design, such as changing square parts to round corners, replacing plastic switches with aluminum round buttons, and developing a new hinge for dust shields that can be opened at any angle.

Interestingly, LoveFrom did not get any revenue from the partnership, and no contracts or financial agreements were signed between the two companies. "We do a considerable part of our work purely out of a love of design," says Jonathan, who reveals that their main source of income is long-term contracts with companies such as Airbnb and Ferrari.

The Linn Sondek LP12-50 phonograph will be produced and delivered between August 2023 and March 2024 and can now be ordered on the Linn website. The record player is very different from the small digital music devices Jonathan designed in the Apple era, such as the AirPods and iPod, but reflects his consistent design style and philosophy.
