CTOnews.com, July 9-France has just passed a new law that allows police to remotely activate cameras and microphones on suspects' mobile phones.

According to Le Monde, the bill has aroused strong opposition from the French public, who believe that it is an invasion of privacy bill, which allows the police to obtain citizens' location, video and audio information at will. French Justice Minister Eric DuPont-Moretti claimed that the bill applies only to suspects of crimes involving at least five years' imprisonment and affects only a few dozen cases a year. In yesterday's debate, French lawmakers added an amendment requiring that any monitoring within the scope of the bill must be approved by a judge and that the monitoring period should not exceed six months.

CTOnews.com noted that the French government had previously expanded the power of the police to monitor people through technical means, and earlier this year the New York Times reported that the French Parliament had passed a bill allowing French police to use drones to monitor people. French President Emmanuel Macron argued at the time that the bill was designed to protect the police from increasingly violent protesters. Protests broke out in France late last month after a teenager, Nagel Melzouk, was shot and killed by a policeman, which has been going on for nearly two weeks. Macron also threatened to shut down the social media platform because he believed the protesters were using apps like TikTok, Snapchat and Telegram to film, post and organize the protests.
